Crochet Tip 1: turning chain for double crochet

You've asked for it: more crochet patterns and tips on my blog. I'm starting a series of "crochet tips" where I will post tips and techniques that I find useful in my own handiwork, and you might too. So the first tip I've recently discovered has made a big difference to the look of crochet rows.

NEATER TURNING CHAIN FOR DOUBLE CROCHET ROWS

When you get to the end of a row of double crochet, patterns normally require you to turn, then chain 3. The chain 3 counts as the first dc of the next row. But I have a better way to give a neater, more aligned edge. Here's how you do it step-by-step.

1. At the end of the first row of dc, turn but DO NOT chain.

2. Single crochet into the last dc of the previous row.

3. Chain 1. (The sc and ch1 count as a dc)

4. Continue the row of double crochet as normal.

See how much neater you edges look?

Free Crochet Peter Pan Collar Pattern

I love Peter Pan collars. They look cute and whimsical over a vintage dress or floral top. I've been wanting to crochet one for ages, but couldn't find any patterns for a simple collar, so I have designed one myself!

Here's the pattern. Feel free to make as many of these a you like. But if you are going to sell the finished product, please be kind and reference me as the designer.

PETER PAN COLLAR CROCHET PATTERN

Materials: 4 ply cotton - I used Panda brand (but worsted weight acrylic or wool would be fine too), small button or bead.

Hook: 3.5mm

Terminology: American crochet terminology used.

ch 65, turn

Row 1. skip fist 3 ch, dc in each ch to end, turn.

Row 2. ch 3, *dc in each of next 5 dc, 2dc next dc*, repeat to end, turn.

Row 3. ch 3, *dc in each of next 6 dc, 2dc next dc*, repeat to end, turn.

Row 4. ch 3, *dc in each of next 7 dc, 2dc next dc*, repeat to end, finish off.

Row 5 - Edging. With right side facing, join yarn in one corner of foundation chain edge. Sc evenly around around, with 2 sc into corners, until you reach the opposite end of the foundation chain. Chain 5, ss into second last sc just made, and join with a ss. (this is the loop for the button). Finish off.

Sew a button or bead to align with the loop. Collar should measure about 14" around the neck.

Crochet Bunting

Happy New Year! I hope the start to your year has been wonderful, and that you all enjoyed/are enjoying the festive season. I had a fabulous Christmas and New Years Eve, and hosted a little New Years pre-party party at my house. Even my dog Sparky got into the spirit of things in her sparkly party hat.

I used fairy lights and bunting to decorate my backyard for the party. I have learnt to sew recently, so made my own bunting from a vintage fabric kit I bought from My Poppet. I know bunting is overused, you see it everywhere now, but I still like it!

My first new crochet project for 2012 is this mini triangle bunting. The pattern is suitable for beginners - I have made the instructions super-easy to follow with lots of photos to reference. Get the pattern here, or buy the finished bunting here.

Snood cowl collar neckwarmer - what do you call it?

It's summer here in Australia, so about time for me to start on new winter designs for 2012. I've had trouble naming my latest knitwear design - these things have just too many names. Sometimes they're called snoods, sometimes cowls, or just plain 'ole neckwarmers. But I've decided on the RIBBED TWIST COLLAR. That title describes it well - the collar has a mobius twist and is crocheted in textural ribbing.

I have a couple of colours available in my etsy and madeit stores now, and the pattern is also available if you would like to crochet one for yourself.

What would you call this knitwear garment?

NEW crochet pattern - scallop collar

Yay, I'm happy to show you my new published crochet pattern! I've had this design in my repertoire for a while, but recently have edited and published it into PDF format.

I've made collars form this pattern for myself and for sale, and it really is versatile and useful little accessory, even if I say so myself. I found it came in extremely handy on my holiday in Venice last January when it was super cold. The collar folds up small for travel, but is surprizingly warm.

The pattern is currently half price in my etsy store (regular price $4).

Well I've been busy lately experimenting with new designs for summer. I've been wearing more hair accessories myself lately, now that my hair is getting quite long. (I've changed my hair colour recently too, now it's a light golden brown instead of blonde).I find these bow hair slides and headbands are just the right amount of girlie with that vintage look that I like.
These will be available at my stall at the pop-up Perth Upmarket at the Subi Street Festival next Thursday night, 1 Dec. Hair slides $11, Headbands $22.

For you crocheters out there, here are some crochet headband tips:

- use wool! It's stretchy.

- as a rule of thumb to get just the right length, stretch the headband round your head. When the ends touch at almost full stretch, the length is about right. You don't want a headband that is too loose.

- decorate with bows, flowers, buttons.

I'm half way through my month of holidaying in Europe. Have spent 2 weeks in Greece and the Greek islands, and today is my last day in beautiful Amsterdam. Here are some photos of me in some of my favourite places.

On the Greek mainland, this is Ancient Delphi.

Free Crochet Collar Pattern

I've been working on some new crochet collar designs and thought I would share this simple pattern I have come up with. Wear it over a vintage dress or plain t-shirt and you'll look super cute.

What you will need:
no8 mercerised cotton
1.5mm crochet hook
measuring tape
scissors
needle

Pattern:
Chain
1. ch2, 6sc into 1st chain
2. 2sc into each sc (12sc), join with ss, do not finish off.
3. continuing from the circle you have just made, chain for 85cm.
4. 6sc into 2nd ch from hook.
5. 2sc into each sc (12sc), join with ss, finish off. Weave in ends.

Lace collar
1. Fold chain length in half. Join yarn 11cm from middle of chain.
2. ch1, sc into same sp, then sc in each chain for 22cm, turn.
3. ch1, dc into same st, dc into each sc to end, turn.
4. *ch 5, sk 2 dc, sc* to last dc, turn.
5. 3 ss into 1st ch5, *ch5, sc into next ch5 space* to end, 3ss into last ch5 space, turn.
repeat step 5 until you have 3 rows of trellis. Finish off, weave in ends.

Crafty yarn wrapped vases

I recently went to the wedding of two of my very good friends, and thought I would share this cool idea for creating a yarn covered vase. They were made in lots of pretty colours and filled with contrasting coloured flowers. A beautiful way to decorate a table. Here's how to do it.

Materials:
various sized glass jars (washed jam jars, etc)
a few different yarns of coloured yarn
hot glu gun or PVA glue

Method:
Glue one end of yarn to bottom of jar. Wrap yarn all the way around jar til you reach the top. Secure with more glue at the top. Fill with fresh flowers!

I've just redone my very basic webpage, I think it's a better look than the previous one, but still not as good as I would like it to be. I like to DIY most things when it comes to my micro Mel P Designs brand, including making my own website.

I pay a small fee through yola.com to own the domain name melpdesigns.com. It's a pretty good way for someone like me with who is not very savvy with webpage building, to get a basic page up and running. Over time I plan on making look more pretty, but want to keep it simplicity and clean.

I really love this photo of my friend Nicola wearing one of my handmade pompom scarves. I think it captures a snapshot of life in winter in Perth - overgrown green gardens, dappled sunlight and rugging up in a wooly scarf.

I would love to know what you think of my website, or hear about any tips you have for designing simple websites. Did someone make one for you? Did you make it yourself? How do you get traffic to your website?

Perth Upmarket June 2011

Yesterday was another successful winter Upmarket for Mel P Designs. Luckily the weather held out, and the crowds were out in force for a pleasant day's shopping in the lovely UWA setting.

My most popular selling items were my owl and koala hats, which sold out before midday. And I'm glad my new pompom scarves and beanies found some appreciative new homes :-)

My favourite purchase of the day was a bottle of lavender & pettigrain organic hand cream from Pear Tree Products. Yumbo!

The weather is just starting to cool down here in Perth, so I've been more motivated to design and make new scarves. I've just listed a bunch today in my etsy and madeit stores. The cowls are just a simple chunky collar that you pull over your head. The longer circles scarves are either worn in a long loop or doubled wrapped around your neck. Both are super cozy and warm :-)

Full mittens - new design

After false starts, misshapen hands and much frogging, I've perfected my new full mittens pattern! These ones are grey with with picot edging and a small flower/doily that I've crocheted from fine cotton thread. They are attached to a long string to hang around your neck. Sometime this year I will write and publisha pattern so you can make your own pair.

I've made tons of these for markets and they prove popular with girls of all ages. You can make them in all sorts of colors with contrasting or complimentary coloured buttons in the middle. Vary the yarn size for different sized flowers - lots of options to be creative. Here is a free pattern for you to make your own!

Crochet Flower Hair Clips and Hair Elastics Pattern by Mel Paton (Mel P Designs)

Yarn: worsted weight
Hook: 4mm
Other: small buttons

1. Chain 2. 5 sc into 2nd ch from hook. Do not join.
2. (ss, sc, 3dc, sc, ss) all into 1st sc.
3. (ss, sc, 3dc, sc, ss) all into next sc.
4. Repeat row 3 for a total of 5 times, you will now have 5 petals.
5. Leave a long end for sewing. Use end to sew a button to the middle and to sew onto a hair clip or elastic band. Finish off and weave in ends.

These headbands are a really cute accessory that also keep you warm. They have proven popular items at markets and in my etsy store. I'm pleased to offer you this free pattern and give permission for you to make as many as you like!

Chunky Headband / Earwarmer Crochet Pattern by Mel Paton (Mel P Designs).
Yarn: Lion Wool Ease Thick and Quick
Hook: 10mm

Headband
Row 1. Chain 37, turn, dc into 4th ch from hook, and in each to end of chain.
Row 2. Ch 3, dc in each st to end of row, turn.
Row 3. same as row 2. Finish off. Leave long end for sewing.
Sew ends of crochet piece together, finish off and weave in ends.

Flower
1. Crochet a magic circle. (If you don't know how to do this, click here for a tutorial). Ch 3 then dc 11 into magic circle. The ch 3 counts as a dc. Join with a ss to 3rd ch 3. (12 dc)
2. Petals: Ch 5, skip 1 dc, sc into next, repeat until you have 6 petals.
3. Finish off, leaving long end for sewing. Sew on button middle, then sew flower to headband over the top of the join of the headband for a neat finish.

There you go, a simple pattern that gives great results. If you've made a headband from this pattern, I would love to know how it turned out!

Traditional Baby Layette

Finally finished!! Isn't it pretty? This set includes a jacket, booties and a bonnet and is crocheted in a traditional shell pattern. I used Cleckheaton Cocoon yarn and velvet ribbon for the ties. The pattern is free, and available online here.

Oxford Street Markets - Double Rainbow all the way

The Oxford Street Markets are held every Saturday during summer at the park at the train station end on Oxford St in Leederville, WA. I held a stall there last weekend with my crochet items, but also shared the space with Double Rainbow Vintage. DR Vintage is a group of 6 girls from Perth (including me!) who collect and now sell vintage clothing and accessories. Here are some photos of our stall. I've been interested in yarn bombing for a while, if you've never heard of it before, here's a link. I've jsut made my first attempt at it today. It's a part of Natalies university project, she is in her final year at Edinburgh Napier University, and she is looking into what happens to artwork after the artist leaves. Well I'm back home again after a wonderful month in Spain and a short visit to London. Some of my favourite things in Spain include eating proper tapas, especially boccorones (anchovies in vinegar) and bacalao (thinly sliced salted cod), watching flamenco, mudejar and muslim architecture, and the mountain landscapes of the Pyrenees and Andalucia.

I've been slack with my blog lately, so I thought I would quickly show you some photos of some of my current designs, and tell you about some of my design plans for my next range of products.

I like circle scarves at the moment, and have made a couple which are in my etsy store:

What an awesome time I had at Made on the Left markets today! If you're in Perth and free tomorrow, they're on again with new stallholders at The Saint hotel in Innaloo. I remembered to take my camera with me to get some photos of my stall set up...A portable clothes rack for scarves.
My hand made bunting across the front of the table. A pin up board and old wooden jewellery box for brooches and crochet necklaces. Wicker heads to display hats.
Painted wooden letters to spell my store name. Covered alligator clips as label/price card holders.

Free Ribbed Crochet Cowl Pattern

I thought I would share my latest design: here is my original pattern for the ribbed crochet cowl!

Yarn - I used 1.5 skeins Moda Vera Shiver

Hook - 6.5mm

Row 1: Ch 20, tun, Dc into 3rd ch from hook, dc across to end

Rows 2 - 21: Alternate rows of flo dc and blo dc to create ribbing

Row 22: sc into first 5 dc, ch 1, sk 1, sc next 6, ch1, sk 1, sc into last 5. (this creates buttonholes)

Row 23: dc into each sc to end.

Finish off. Weave in ends. Sew 2 large buttons to match buttonhole position.

Feel free to make as many of these as you like, but please do not copy or resell the pattern as your own. Thank you!

Less Boring Photos

It's tricky to take interesting product photos from your own home with a fairly cheap Canon digital camera! My backdrop here is a white sheet and my camera is a Canon Powershot A530. I turn on the macro setting and make sure I'm in a well naturally-lit area.

I wasn't happy with my scarf photos (as in my blog post a 2 posts ago), so retook photos of them using different angles. And I think they're much more interesting now.

Free Crochet Scarf Pattern

Here is a free pattern for you crocheters out there. It's for a 2 meter long ribbed scarf. It's a very simple design, but looks elegant and can be worn by both men and women. And the length is perfect, nice and long for wrapping around multiple times.

Yarn: I used Paton's Wilderness, but any chunky yarn will work.

Hook: 10mm

Row 1: Ch 150 LOOSELY, turn and hdc into second ch from hook, then hdc in each st to end, turn,
ch 2.

Row 2. hdc in Front Loop Only to end, turn, ch 2.

Row 3: hdc in Back Loop Only to end, turn, ch 2.

Continue alternating row 2 & 3 until your scarf is wide enough. If using Paton's Wilderness, you can get 10 rows from 2 balls of wool.

Ribbing variation: do back loop stitches for each row to get ribbing on both sides.

You can make as many of these as you like. Have fun!

I'll be having a table at the next Perth Upmarket! It'll be held at Winthrop Hall at UWA on Sunday the 27th June. Some of the winter woolies I'll be selling include super chunky long scarves, sweet ascot scarves, capelets, fingerless mittens, hats and beanies, headbands and brooches. I've sourced some divine super-bulky weight yarn from the US that I'm using for some of the items. Will post some photos soon.

Vintage Baby Blanket

I'm very happy to have finally finished crocheting this babies blanket from a vintage pattern I found. (For a relative of my boyfriend's first baby). In the olden days mums or grandmas would make beautiful blankets, gowns, bonnets and booties for babies in delicate and intricate patterns. People just don't have the time any more, which is a shame.

I am seriously coveting Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick. A client from the US shipped me over 2 skeins to make her some arm warmers, now I'm in love. But they don't sell it here in Australia. I've had to order some of this at a ridiculous shipping cost from the US. If any Australian retailers of wool are reading, please stock Lion Brand!

Lucky me, the lovely Bec from madeit interviewed me for madeit's designer spotlight. Here are a few of the Q and A's, you can catch the rest of my interview here.

Tell us a bit about yourself? (name, where you live, general stuff about you)

I’m Mel Paton, a 32 year-old crochet designer from Perth, WA. I also work as a primary school teacher in the public school system. I love both jobs, but have reduced my teaching load this year to have more time and energy to ‘make’. I have no kids, but I do have a live-in boyfriend and a dog.

Can you explain your craft/art and the material you like to use?

I crochet modern accessories for all ages! I make fingerless mittens, scarves, cowls, hats, legwarmers, hair accessories, iPod covers, tea cosies and more. My favourite yarn to use is pure Australian wool. It’s such nice quality and really warm too. I also love alpaca yarn from Peru, but because it is quite expensive I save it for special items. With my extra bits and pieces like buttons and brooch backs, I try to use recycled wherever possible.

Where do you get your inspiration and what is your creative process?

With crochet being such a versatile craft, inspiration for my designs comes from everywhere. You can make so many different shapes and forms from crochet, so there are seemingly endless options for what I can make. I am constantly coming up with new ideas. Some ideas are a bit silly, like my Nozy nose warmer and pom-pom headband. Vintage patterns are also an inspiration, such as the pattern I found for an awesome 70’s crochet bikini I am currently working on.

Leg Warmers

I've been working on leg warmers for a while now, and finally can show you my two latest styles. The mustard ones are knee-high and lace-up at the side. The black ones are a shorter style in a lacy pattern. These are going to be my favourite accessory this winter!

I've finished writing and testing a pattern for the ankle length warmers, and it is now available from my etsy store as a PDF file that I email to you upon purchase, so you can make a pair of your very own!

Book Swap Fundraising Party

These photos are from a media swap party I attended yesterday. The idea is awesome if you want a fun way to raise money for charity. Everyone brings 3-5 unwanted CDs, DVDs, books, cassette tapes or records to donate, a plate of food drink to share, and some gold coins to purchase/bid for items. Any 'gold' goes straight to the auction table, and less sought after items to the $1 table/blanket. Get a confident and amusing friend to be the auctioneer to auction off the 'gold' items, and you go home with some new media and raise money for charity too.

Money from this media swap party went to ‘Ganesha Books’ in Bali, a very wothtwhile cause. Well done to Adam and Michelle for organizing this!

Free Crochet Pattern - Pea in a Pod

Small amount of dark green yarn

Small amount of light green yarn

Small amount of black yarn

4mm (G) hook

Polyester filling

scissors, tapestry needle, stitch marker

Instructions

Pea Use light green yarn and 4 mm hook.

Rnd 1: Work 6 sc into a magic ring (6sc) Tighten ring so there is no middle hole.

Rnd 2: 2sc into each sc around (12sc)

Rnd 3: *2sc into first sc, sc into next*, repeat to end (18sc)

Rnd 4: sc around (18sc)

Rnd 5: repeat Rnd 4 (18dc)

Rnd 6: repeat Rnd 4 (18tr)

Rnd 7: *sc, sc 2tog*, repeat to end (12sc) Stuff pea firmly.

Rnd 8: sc2tog around (6sc) SS in next st. FO by weaving through each stitch and pull to tighten

Pea Pod Use dark green yarn and 4 mm hook.

Pod Bottom

Rnd 1: Work 6sc into a magic ring (6sc) Tighten ring so there is no middle hole.

To connect pea pod top and bottom, thread needle and join to edge of bottom. Whip stitch 4 stitches together. FO. Weave in ends.

To make pea face, use pictures as a guide to sew on face with black yarn. Or else you can use felt pieces or plastic eyes if you prefer. FO. Weave in ends.

So I've just returned from my wonderful (but way too short) trip to Italy and London. my highlights were walking the deserted streets of Venice at night, a boat ride up Lake Como and all the delicious food and drink. My favourite new drink is an Aperol Spritz.

I used my iPod a lot on my holiday, and decided to make a new style cover to give it a little personality. So I've made 2 little sock monkey covers that fit iPods, iPhones and other devices of similar size. I like the green one the best, I think.

Very early Friday morning I leave for Italy. Our destinations are Rome, Florence, Siena, Lake Como and Venice. Followed by a couple of nights in London. So I'll be posting some pretty photos of Italy over the next 3 weeks. I'm most looking forward to gondola rides in the canals of Venice!
